Theresa May speaks out against No Deal Brexit in jab at Boris Johnson as she blasts ‘gutter’ populists

THERESA May today warned Boris Johnson a No Deal Brexit is unacceptable and called on the new PM to embrace “compromise”.

The outgoing Prime Minister used her final speech to hit out at her likely successor and his threat to leave the EU without a deal.

And she attacked populists such as Donald Trump, blaming them for “coarsening our public debate” and leaving politics “in the gutters”.

Speaking in Central London, Mrs May insisted it was vital to deliver Brexit but warned the next PM would fail if they took a hardline No Deal stance.

She said: “Whatever path we take must be sustainable for the long-term – so that delivering Brexit brings our country back together. That has to mean some kind of compromise.

“Some argue I should have taken the United Kingdom out of the European Union with No Deal on March 29. Some wanted a purer version of Brexit. Others to find a way of stopping it altogether.

“But most people across our country had a preference for getting it done with a deal.

“The problem was that when it came time for Parliament to ratify the deal, our politics retreated back into its binary pre-referendum positions – a winner-takes-all approach to leaving or remaining.”

LAST BLAST

Mrs May also slammed the senior Brexiteers who demanded that she quit in return for supporting her withdrawal agreement.

She blasted: “I put my own job on the line. I was told that if I said I would stand down then the votes would come behind the deal.

“I said I would stand down and I am doing so. The votes didn’t come. That’s politics.”

Her comments came in a speech warning about the dangers of populist politics, a week before her last day in office.

But asked by The Sun if she was taking a dig at Boris and Trump, Mrs May replied: “This is a general observation that I have.

“I’ve seen it in politics and across the world. It is important that we try and bring back in debate generally to a more reasonable area.”

Next Wednesday the outgoing PM is expected to say a few words outside 10 Downing Street as she finally steps down and hands over to Mr Johnson or Jeremy Hunt.
