Remainer power grab to steal Brexit control from next PM and stop Boris taking us out with No Deal
REMAINERS are today trying to tie the hands of the next PM – stopping Boris Johnson from delivering a No Deal Brexit.
Jeremy Corbyn is leading a bid to seize control of the Commons and give MPs the power to overrule the new Prime Minister.
This afternoon Parliament will vote on the motion to take power out of the hands of the Government.
If the Remainer plot succeeds, it could be almost impossible for Boris to carry out his No Deal threat if he makes it to No10.
The motion being voted on would reserve Tuesday June 25 for MPs to have their say on the next steps in Brexit.
They would then be able to introduce a new law tying the Government’s hands – for example, by demanding that Article 50 be revoked if the UK is heading for a No Deal on October 31.
Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer told the Commons today: “It is a first and limited step to ensure that Parliament cannot be locked out of the Brexit process over the coming weeks and months.
“It paves the way for Parliament to take further action, including to prevent No Deal, should the house consider that necessary.
“And crucially, it means that if the next Prime Minister is foolish enough to try to pursue a No Deal Brexit without gaining the consent of this house, or to prorogue Parliament in order to force through No Deal, then Parliament would have the means to prevent that.
“It will introduce a safety valve in the Brexit process and it will be a reminder to all Conservative leadership candidates that this house will take every step necessary to prevent a No Deal.”
CROSS-PARTY POWER GRAB
The power grab is backed by Tory Remainers including Oliver Letwin, Dominic Grieve and Sam Gyimah.
That means it is on course to succeed unless a significant number of Labour MPs rebel against Mr Corbyn’s order to support it.
The manoeuvre is similar to Yvette Cooper’s successful bid to delay Brexit in April, which passed by a margin of just one vote.
Boris Johnson, Dominic Raab and other leadership contenders have promised to take Britain out of the EU on October 31 – even without a deal.
At his leadership launch today, Boris blasted: “We simply will not get a result if we give the slightest hint that we want to go on kicking the can down the road with yet more delay.”
Chancellor Philip Hammond warned all the candidates it would be almost impossible to deliver Brexit in time for the Halloween deadline.
He said: “I don’t think it’s sensible for candidates to box themselves into a corner on this.

“Parliament will not allow a No Deal exit from the EU and our experience to date has suggested that it might not be that easy to agree a deal in Parliament.
“I think it will be very difficult – in fact I think it will be impossible – to do this by October 31 and I don’t think it will be in our national interest that we drive towards this cliff-edge at speed.”
Mr Hammond predicted the EU would refuse to change the existing withdrawal agreement.
