Jeremy Corbyn to be ambushed by hundreds of Labour branches demanding he commits to reversing Brexit

JEREMY Corbyn will be ambushed by hundreds of Labour branches demanding he commits to reversing Brexit at a conference showdown.

A staggering 287 branches have signed up to a motion demanding Labour backs a second referendum and campaigns to stay in the EU at their annual meeting in September.

Activists behind the campaign blasted Mr Corbyn for refusing to budge his position – and warned he is “delaying the inevitable”.

It comes after Labour deputy Tom Watson warned they face becoming “electoral history” unless Labour becomes the party of Remain.

But while Mr Corbyn has said “any deal” should be put to another vote, he has refused to throw his support behind the Remain camp.

He is said to be considering letting Labour MPs campaign on both sides if there is a second referendum as he desperately tries to stop the brexit civil war blowing his party apart.

‘ELECTORAL HISTORY’

Mr Watson told ITV’s Peston Show: “If we do end up deciding we are going to campaign to remain in the EU it’s history making.

“I think that’s quite important because we could be electoral history if we don’t make a clear statement of intent.”

He added: “I think it is in the national interest that we become a pro-Remain, pro-reform party and we let the people have a final look at what any deal looks like.”

Anti-Brexit Labour activists have been gearing up their campaign to force a change of policy at their conference in September.

In a massive show of force, nearly 300 branches have submitted an anti-Brexit conference motion drafted by Another Europe is Possible, Labour for a Socialist Europe and Open Labour.

Ana Oppenheim, a campaign organiser with Another Europe is Possible and a Momentum activist, said: “Equivocating now is just delaying the inevitable.

“Labour cannot satisfy everyone on Brexit, and triangulating is losing us voters on both sides.”

But Labour MPs with big Leave constituencies in the parties heartlands have warned it would be “toxic” to their core voters to try and stop Brexit.
