Theresa May has gone on a walking holiday in Wales to make another big Brexit decision

THERESA May has gone on a Welsh walking holiday to make another massive Brexit decision, it emerged Monday night.

Downing Street was forced to insist the PM wasn’t plotting another snap election after revealing she had left for Snowdonia again.

Mrs May called the disastrous 2017 nationwide poll – which saw her Commons majority thrown away – on her return from her annual Easter trip to North Wales.

But it emerged Labour is expecting an answer from the PM next week on another Premiership defining issue – whether to join a customs union with the EU.

While technical discussions continue between party aides this week, a cross-party deal has effectively stalled over the key dilemma, which has become a red line for Jeremy Corbyn’s support.

Senior ministers and their opposition counterparts have set an unofficial deadline of their next meeting next Tuesday when Westminster returns from a 10 day Easter break to decide whether a deal is doable between them.

There will be then be just four weeks left to pass the Withdrawal Bill through Parliament to avoid having to hold £100m elections for MEPs on May 23.

TORY DIVISIONS

A Labour source told The Sun: “Theresa May has a big decision to make on her walking holiday. Is she going to have a customs union or not?

“Nothing is going to happen of any serious substance until she can give us an answer to that.”

The customs union dilemma is threatening to split the Tory party in two.

A series of Remain-leaning ministers have urged the PM to abandon the party manifesto pledge and sign up to one to get Brexit over the line after Britain’s exit date was pushed back by another six months last week.

But Eurosceptic Conservative MPs have insisted it would be a bitter betrayal of the referendum result and strip Britain of any independent trade policy.

Jeremy Hunt urged Mrs May on Monday to think about healing her bitter Brexit rift with the DUP instead.

The Foreign Secretary became the first Cabinet minister to cast serious public doubt on any success of talks with Labour, as other senior Tories suspect Labour just wants to wind down the clock.

Mr Hunt said: “We don’t know if they’re going to work and it may be we need to find a way to rebuild the Conservative/DUP coalition”.

Mrs May and husband Philip – on the six day walking holiday until Thursday – were spotted on the way to Wales on Saturday when they stopped at a Welcome Break service station on the M54 in Shropshire.

Meanwhile Mrs May faced fresh criticism of her handling of Brexit Monday night as ex-Tory minister Nick Boles accused her of making a “moral error” by pursuing a “hardline” approach.

The MP, who dramatically quit the Tories earlier this month in protest at his party’s refusal to compromise on Brexit, said she had failed as PM because she had tried to be “more Brexiter than thou”.

DIP IN A CANOE

Mr Boles told the House magazine: “She persuaded herself she needed to be more Brexity than Brexiters.

“It was a massive, not just a miscalculation, but a moral error. One that has come to determine and define everything that’s happened since.”

Jeremy Corbyn was left high and dry on Monday – as he was snapped in a canoe not in water.

He donned a life jacket and helmet for the bizarre photocall, but failed to launch himself into the lake.

As he grinned for the cameras, Brexit talks between Labour and the Government were also going nowhere fast as two sides did not both meeting.

Ministers said they would hold a third week of national unity talks with Labour as they insist they are trying to thrash out a deal.

But both sides have not met since last Friday.

Mr Corbyn – who is aiming for No10 – also tried his hand at a spot of archery as he visited the outdoor activity centre in Yorkshire.

But the 69 year-old missed his target and sent the arrow flying into the net behind.
